# Link to another table

> Point each row at its row in another table, bring back the values you need, and count the rows pointing at each row.

Point each row at its row in another table, such as each person at their company, and bring back the values you need. On the other table, count the rows pointing at each of its rows.

![The Tools panel open on its Your data tab, listing Link to another table and Count rows pointing here under Your tables, above Connected tools.](https://mintcdn.com/oneprofile/OEQQduSUmrxvyQqG/images/tables/columns/link-to-another-table.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=OEQQduSUmrxvyQqG\&q=85\&s=55b6c928f62189edd4e31bb431762266)

Both columns, under Your tables on the Your data tab of Tools.

## Link each row to another table

**1. Open Your data**

In a table from [Tables](https://app.getoneprofile.ai/tables), click **Tools** and open the **Your data** tab. Choose **Link to another table**, under **Your tables**.

**2. Pick the other table**

Under **Link to**, choose it in **Table**. A pair of columns whose names match is filled in for you.

**3. Choose what to match on**

Under **Match on**, pick a column in **This table** and the column holding the same value in **Other table**. **Add a pair** adds a fallback, up to three pairs.

**4. Pick the values to bring back**

Tick each value under **Bring back**. Tick **Own column** beside one to give it a column of its own.

**5. Create the column**

Save it and run it. Linking is free.

A line under the pairs counts the matches as you choose them, such as "312 of the first 500 rows match". It also counts the rows with nothing to match, and lists a few values the other table does not hold.

## Read a linked cell

The cell shows the other row's name as a chip, taken from **Shown as**. Click it to see which column it matched on and every value it brought back.

* **Open in Companies** opens that row in the other table.
* The + beside a value gives it its own column.

A row whose value matches nothing reads "Not in Companies". A row with nothing to match on is skipped.

## Count the rows pointing here

**1. Open the other table**

On the table being linked to, such as Companies, click **Tools**, open **Your data**, and choose **Count rows pointing here**.

**2. Pick the table and its link**

Under **Rows pointing here**, choose the **Table** that links here, then its **Link column**. With only one, it is picked for you.

**Listed as** sets the name each row goes by. Click a count to list the rows pointing at that row, each one a link to it.

## Keep links current

A link updates itself. When the other table changes, only the link cells that changed update, and the columns reading them run again like any other dependent cell.

## Good to know

> **How does a row pick its match?**
>
> The pairs are tried in order, and the first pair whose value the other table holds wins. When several rows hold it, the one highest in that table wins.
>
> Matching ignores case, spacing, `https://`, `www.`, and a trailing slash, so `www.acme.com/` matches `acme.com`.

> **Which name does a linked cell show?**
>
> The value in the column chosen under **Shown as**. Left on **Automatic**, a column that holds a name is picked for you. A row with nothing in that column reads **Linked**.

> **Why can't I tick a value under Bring back?**
>
> Point at it to read why. A value that came through a link of its own cannot be brought back again, so links never chain. A column holding a whole record cannot be brought back either.

> **What changes count as the other table changing?**
>
> A cell edit counts, and so does a finished run. So do rows added or removed, and the table moving to Trash or coming back. A linked table in Trash fails each cell with "The table this column links to is no longer available."

> **Does a link spend credits when it updates?**
>
> The link itself is free. A paid column that reads it runs again by itself only when **Run automatically on new and changed rows** is on, as after a hand edit. See [Run columns](https://docs.getoneprofile.ai/tables/run-columns).

> **What happens to a link cell I edit by hand?**
>
> It is left alone. An update to the other table never overwrites it.

> **How big can the other table be?**
>
> Up to 20,000 rows, for the table you link to and the table you count from. A bigger one fails each cell with "A linked table can have up to 20,000 rows, and this one has more."

> **Why does Count rows pointing here find no link column?**
>
> The table you picked has no **Link to another table** column pointing at this one. Add one there first.

> **Why can't I change the Company column's table?**
>
> A people search that follows a table made it, and the search keeps its table and pairs. You can still change **Shown as** and **Bring back**. See [Saved searches](https://docs.getoneprofile.ai/find-leads/saved-searches.md).

> **What happens to links when I copy a table?**
>
> A duplicate keeps its links. Copy two linked tables together, to another workspace too, and the link points at the copy. There, the link cells stay empty until the column runs.
>
> A copy's **Count rows pointing here** column starts with nothing chosen, since nothing points at a new table yet.

> **What does an exported file hold for these columns?**
>
> A link writes the other row's name, and a count writes the number. See [Export a file](https://docs.getoneprofile.ai/tables/export-a-file.md).

> **What does a Send row to another table cell show?**
>
> A chip linking to the row it created in the other table.

> **Can the AI Assistant add these columns?**
>
> Yes. Ask it to link a table to another, change a link, or count the rows pointing here. See [Chat](https://docs.getoneprofile.ai/assistant/chat.md).
